Our belief is that each
child is gifted and has the potential for success.
With that belief, we offer afterschool and summer
programs for area children as well as support for
parents and caregivers through our Family Wellness
Nights. Our children are the neighborhood's greatest
resource--the future of the community.
Miracle Makers:
Consistent with these values, we invest in our
children by offering tutoring, educational enrichment
and other supports through the Miracle Makers program
for children kindergarten through 5th grade.
Students in the 6th through 8th grades attend
afterschool through the
streetpeace program.
Our results show that children are benefiting from the
tutoring and parent satisfaction has been high!
East End is part of a federal evaluation as a 21st
Century Program and has shown improvement on the Ohio
Achievement Test scores. Our program also
participated in survey completed by Ohio State
University that was completed by parents, staff,
faculty, principals and others in the community.
Our survey was one of 200 completed by OSU and we scored
above the state mean on all measures of quality for an
afterschool/summer program.
It is this commitment to children and the community that
led to Dayton Public Schools choosing East End Community
Services to become the partner in the new Ruskin
School. Ruskin School is one of the five neighborhood
schools that is part of the project with Dayton Public
Schools, University of Dayton, Dayton Foundation and a
wide array of other funders. Over a two year period,
intensive planning and negotiation led to East End
Community School, a charter, merging into Dayton Public
Schools. The new Ruskin School will include a local
Management Council with representatives from East End
Community Services, Dayton Public Schools, the Dayton
Education Association, faculty and principal.
The Miracle Makers program is part of extending the
learning that occurs in school into the afterschool
hours. The afterschool services include academic
tutoring, character development and prevention
programs. Staff use a positive behavior support
approach to working with the children, helping each
child with their unique needs.
During the summer months, children are at risk for
losing some of the learning material that they acquired
during the prior year. Our summer program offers
exciting "hands on" activities that teach new skills and
reinforce past learning. The children enjoy a wide
range of field trips and other educational
opportunities.
Many
partners help us provide services to children.
University of Dayton and Wright State University provide
us with children. Sinclair Community College is
committed to helping us with science, technology,
engineering and math (STEM) education for our children.
With commitment from funders like JPMorgan Chase, we are
also building early childhood learning through reaching
out to parents. Cityfolk has brought opportunities
for resident artists to work with children and to
provide cultural performances. The photo shows Santiago
Jiminez, a nationally known musician working with a
Miracle Maker's child.
