Helping
families and individuals reach their fullest
potential is an integral part of the mission of
East End.
Each year, we assist more than 700
individuals achieve their goals, including
finding a living wage job. Our bilingual,
English and Spanish speaking and trilingual,
English, Spanish and Arabic speaking staff
assist persons with finding the right job that
matches their skills. These services are free
to individuals due to the generosity of our
contributors.
Parent
Education:
We see supporting parents and families as
central to our efforts to support children.
We provide Family Wellness Nights that provide a
wealth of topics to the parents in the
community. These sessions are offered at
Ruskin PreK-8 School. Topics include
information about supporting your child's
academic performance, information on health,
lead based paint awareness, etc.
Employment and Education:
Our employment consultants work with people to
identify career interests, build resumes,
develop job seeking skills and on the job
attitudes and behaviors that will lead to
success. A comprehensive plan is created that
connects individuals to the right job for their
interests and needs. To assist in the job
search, individuals have access to computers,
employment guides and other resources. Computer
classes are provided that offer individuals the
opportunity to master new technology. People
are also connected to the educational and
training programs that will allow them to
acquire new skills including a GED or entering a
vocational program. Job placement and retention
is a key component of our services. 88 percent
of the persons that complete the assessment
process are placed in positions.
Family and Individual:
In addition to employment, many persons need
assistance with housing, childcare, access to
health care and other resources. Staff work
with individuals on a personal plan that focuses
on empowering the individual to make significant
changes in their lives. A program with Benefit
Bank enables individuals to access needed
resources. East End was able to help
individuals secure an aggregate of $600,000 in
earned income tax credits and benefits in 2008
through Ohio Benefit Bank. We also have an
AmeriCorps member that provides Ohio Benefit
Bank services to the community. Working with
the City of Dayton and Montgomery County as well
as other providers, East End also provides
access to housing assistance through the
Homeless Prevention and Rapid Rehousing Program.
Latino Family Advocacy:
East End has become a new home to many Latino
immigrants, who need assistance in accessing
services. The staff also provide training and
information to agencies to help them respond
more effectively to the needs of this
populations, including individuals with limited
English proficiency. Wright State University
has assisted with teaching English as Second
Language courses to these individuals. Our work
empowering Latino women in the neighborhood led
to the development of a dance troupe Sol
Azteca.
Elderly and Frail Project:
Many elderly persons face considerable barriers
to living independently in their own homes.
Through home visits and outreach, we identify
persons living in neighborhoods in East Dayton
and connected them to needed services. In
addition, an assessment is made of the
individual's home environment and home
modifications for health or safety can be
made. This project is part of a collaboration
with Rebuilding Dayton Together.
