Dayton Promise
Neighborhood Planning
The national vision is
that:
“all
children growing up in Promise Neighborhoods have access to effective
schools and strong systems of family and community support that will
prepare them to attain an excellent education and successfully
transition to college and career.”
The Promise
Neighborhoods is designed to meet the needs of children from birth
through college to a career. The Promise Neighborhood concept is
based upon excellent results received by Harlem Children's Zone under
the leadership of Geoffrey Canada. However, the strategies
that are used by the Harlem Children's Zone are best practices that have
been gathered from a variety of other programs across the nation.
What is unique about the Harlem Children's Zone is their ability to pull
all of these researched based models together.
The following model
based upon Geoffrey Canada's work provides an
overview of the transition from early childhood through each level of
school. Our goal is that every child reach their
potential which includes access to a great start, a wonderful education
and the ability to attend college and enter a career.

We have many
partners in this process and want to encourage neighbors, parents, faith
based groups, churches and others to participate in this planning
process. The model above shows the
progression from early childhood through college and support for family
and community.
There are groups that will
address each one of these areas. Your involvement is crucial to
this effort. If you are interested in serving on one or more
committees, please contact Amy Jomantas at
ajomantas@east-end.org.
We will also be
undertaking surveys, talking with parents, neighbors and other
stakeholders. Your opinion is important to us as we move through
this process.
Our intent to focus
first on Ruskin PreK-8 School and Edison PreK-8 School areas and then as
funding is available in later years, expand to other neighborhoods.
The following map shows Edison PreK-8 School and Ruskin PreK-8 Schools
and surrounding areas. This is an interactive map and you can
explore neighborhoods by clicking on the map and zooming in or out.
