Dayton Promise
Neighborhood Planning
Promise Neighborhoods
planning looks at what interventions and supports are needed to help
youth succeed from birth through college. The Education
Solutions Group led by Tom Lasley II, Ph.D. Director of EDvention is designed to
look at three separate points in education, early childhood from birth
to kindergarten, kindergarten through 12th grade and also the transition
from high school to college and career.
Early Childhood
This group will look
at needs of parents and children from pregnancy, birth to kindergarten.
The group will look at different types and combinations of interventions
or services that have the highest level of impact on improving
kindergarten readiness. Services include parent education,
childcare, preschool, and home visiting services. The group will
examine the role of interim assessments like the Ages and Stages
Questionnaire and the Bracken in evaluating progress of the children.
The group will also look at the transition into kindergarten. The goal
is to have Ready Children, Ready Families and Ready Schools that will
ensure that students enter kindergarten prepared to succeed.
K-12 Elementary,
Middle and High School
This group will look
at what is needed to increase the success of children from kindergarten
onwards through the end of high school. The group will examine
what changes are needed in terms of classroom instruction, teacher
quality, evaluation and professional development in order for children
to succeed. This group also looks at other sources of
support, e.g. extending the day--through longer school day or
afterschool, providing programming during summer, tutoring, use of
technology for remediation and other sources of support. The
group will also look at issues like attendance and discipline that
impact school performance.
High School,
College and Career
The transition
from high school into college is critical for area youth. With
this effort we are building upon the Community Learning in Partnership
(CLIP) planning effort aimed at increasing the numbers of low income
students who enroll in college and graduate. This planning process
was led by a variety of agencies, including EDvention, Sinclair
Community College, City of Dayton and many other partners. Our
goal is to ensure that students emerge from high school prepared for
college so that they do not have to take years of developmental courses.
In addition, we want students to be able to graduate from college or
receive college certificates that will lead to upward career mobility.
Join Us
We have many
partners in this process and want to encourage neighbors, parents, faith
based groups, churches and others to participate in this planning
process. The model above shows the
progression from early childhood through college and support for family
and community.
There are groups that will
address each one of these areas. Your involvement is crucial to
this effort. If you are interested in serving on one or more
committees, please contact Amy Jomantas at
ajomantas@east-end.org.
