Key dates in the planning process regarding education reform and neighborhood initiatives.

The Fitz Center, Dayton Foundation and other community organizations begin planning process for neighborhood school centers in Dayton, Ohio in conjunction with Dayton Public Schools.

The Fitz Center, Dayton Public Schools, East End Community Services and neighborhood residents begin the planning process that will design the new Ruskin PreK-8 School.   Information is gathered about the Harlem Children's Zone model.

Dayton Public Schools and East End begin negotiations that will eventually lead to a plan to merge a charter into the public school under an innovative site based management agreement.   Edison School is one of the first four neighborhood school centers in Dayton, OH and Dayton Urban League is providing those services in the interim location for the Edison School.

Ruskin PreK-8 School opens.  This site becomes the fifth neighborhood school center.  A local Management Council that reports to Dayton Public Schools oversees the governance of Ruskin.  Afterschool is moved to the school and nearly triples in size.  Progress is made with Edison PreK-8 School design.

Plan is made to add early childhood component to the continuum of services being provided by East End and Dayton Urban League.  The Office of Family and Children First and Montgomery County agree to fund a three year pilot.  Members from agencies visit Harlem Children's Zone for a three day training through the Practitioner's Institute.  The representatives to the visit to Harlem came from the following agencies: Even Start through City of Kettering, Miami Valley Child Development Center--Head Start,  Dayton Public Schools, East End Community Services and Frank M Tait Foundation and Ready, Set, Soar.

Planning process continues with greatest emphasis on early childhood education.  Full Service Community School grant is submitted as part of this effort with the goal of expanding services at Belmont High School as well as Ruskin PreK-8 School.
